40km/h school zones help protect children on their way to and from school at the times and places where they are often in high numbers.
This lower speed limit reduces the risk and potential severity of a crash.
At an accident earlier this year on Eaglehawk Road, Leading Senior Constable Brendan Keegan reminded drivers to be aware of pedestrians – particularly children – in the busy morning period and at school times.
School zone signs and flashing lights may be around your local school and can help improve the visibility of school zones. Time-based school zones operate between 8am – 9am, and 2:30pm – 4pm on weekdays during Victoria’s school terms (except public holidays).
So the next time you are driving in a school zone be mindful and slow down.
